Fatorda residents threaten to sue PWD over potholes

Shadow Council threatens to block traffic on Friday

MARGAO: Some citizens from Fatorda have threatened to file a criminal complaint and a public interest litigation against the PWD for “endangering the lives of people.”
Meanwhile, the Shadow Council for Margao has threatened to block traffic on the road around the Margao Municipal Council building on September 13.
In a memorandum presented to the Executive Engineer, Sanjeev Raiturkar and other Fatorda residents pointed out that the roads in Margao have become death traps. He cited examples of people getting injured and a case of death.
The residents submitted six demands which should be attended to within a week failing which, they have threatened to file a criminal complaint and a PIL against the PWD for criminal negligence leading to injury and death of citizens.
Raiturkar demanded that PWD set up a helpline which people can call to report potholes on roads and PWD team headed by a junior engineer should attend to the potholes immediately. Besides, he also demanded that signboards warning people of a potholes be also erected whenever they are seen.
He also demanded that whenever road works are undertaken, the name of the contractor along with his contact number should be well displayed at the site so that people can monitor the work being done.
He also demanded an enquiry into the works undertaken in Fatorda specially the road from Arlem circle to Ravindra Bhavan, which did not get the top surface asphalt. 
Raiturkar demanded that all the roads in Fatorda and Margao be repaired within a week, failing which he would initiate legal proceedings against the PWD.
Meanwhile, Savio Coutinho of Shadow Council for Margao has threatened to block the roads around the municipal building and appealed to people to use alternate routes and avoid those roads on Sept 13.
The road blockade is planned to protest against the PWD’s failure to attend to the roads in Margao despite several pleas and reminders.
