Fatorda screams bias in waste collection scheme

MARGAO: Calling upon the Margao Municipal Council to convene a joint meeting to discuss the status of the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, Citizens of Fatorda threatened to stop waste dumping at Sonsodo if the Margao Municipal Council discriminates against Fatorda area of the city in waste collection and disposal.

A delegation comprising of prominent citizens, including former MMC chairperson Dr Gopal Vaidya, Eng Deep Karapurkar, retd SP Vishnudas Vernekar, Sunil Krishnanath Naik called on MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant to seek the status of the waste collection and disposal mechanism.
They demanded that the civic body call a joint meeting of the stakeholders to discuss the present status of the Sonsodo waste treatment plant.
The delegation pointed that when the door-to-door facility is made mandatory to residential societies, housing colonies, etc, then why the exercise is not extended to commercial establishments in Fatorda area of the city. “We feel discriminated by the actions of the civic body. When the civic body collect waste door-to-door from residential and commercial establishments in Margao, why is the same facility not extended to Fatorda as well?” questioned Sunil Naik.
Naik warned that Fatorda citizens will not sit quite and watch the discrimination against Fatorda area of the city, threatening to stop trucks transporting waste to Sonsodo.
The MMC Chief Officer later told the media that the civic body would call a meeting of the stakeholders to discuss the Sonsodo plant. 
Meanwhile, in a memorandum submitted to the chief officer, the citizens drew attention to the menace posed by stray cattle, endangering the life of pedestrians and motorists, including two-wheeler riders. They have requested the chief officer to depute the civic animal rescue team to round up the strays.
