Faulty transformer conks off, plunges Mandopa into darkness

MARGAO: The Mandopa area in Navelim village was plunged into darkness after the old and faulty transformer finally conked off.

On Wednesday, the electricity department had to bring in a mobile transformer unit after the old transformer started emitting sparks due to overload and efforts were underway to replace the faulty transformer with a new one.
Eleuterio Carneiro, vice president of Navelchea Xetkarancho Ekvott pointed out that the power transformer located near the Mandopa bridge was emitting sparks since the last five months and we were experiencing constant voltage fluctuations. And due to fluctuations, our electronic gadgets and home appliances such as LED/LCD TVs, washing machines, ovens, geysers were damaged, he added.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the electricity department linesmen spent the entire day trying to fix the problem but later on they realised that the old transformer needed to be replaced with a new one. However, the locals were upset that it took the linesmen 24 hours to rectify the fault as the faulty transformer was giving them sleepless nights.
“The Electricity Department linesmen came to rectify faults at night with small hand torch which went off within 10-15 minutes. I advise the Chief Secretary and Chief Electrical Engineer that instead of distributing free LED bulbs to the power consumers, they should equip the electricity department linesmen with rechargeable high power beam torches as they risk their lives while on duty attending to faulty transformers and other overhead high tension lines, he added.
Seeking local MLA’s intervention into the matter, he said that another transformer needs to be installed at Ravora, given the fact that the area shares the load with the existing transformer at Mandopa.
