FDA told to keep sufficient stock of Remdesivir

PANJIM: The State Health Department has issued directions to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to maintain sufficient stock of Remdesivir, the anti-viral drug in the State.

The directions come after the Central government’s decision to ban the export of Remdesivir.

“In my interaction with FDA Director Jyoti Sardessai, I have instructed them (FDA) to maintain sufficient inventory of the anti-viral drug, Remdesivir. Manufacturing agencies are directed to keep stock of 5000 units of Remdesivir to ensure that we are equipped and that the people of the State do not suffer,” Health Minister Vishwajit Rane tweeted.

It is to be noted that across the country, the drug is given intravenously to hospitalised COVID-19 patients. People typically receive an injection once a day for 5 to 10 days, based on the severity of their condition.

In October, FDA (India) changed Remdesivir’s status from an emergency use authorisation medication to an approved drug.
