Fear grips women over rise in chain-snatching cases

PANJIM: As many as five incidents of chain-snatching were reported across the State on Saturday raising fears in the minds of the people especially women and the Goa Police intensifying its patrolling.

Two chain-snatching incidents were reported at Colva Police Station and one each at Cuncolim and Maina-Curtorim Police Stations. Also two more cases including a theft of a mobile phone handset were reported in the jurisdiction of North Goa Police District last week. 

According to the Colva Police, two unidentified persons riding a two-wheeler snatched a gold chain of a woman at Varca on Saturday and fled. The value of the stolen gold chain is Rs 30,000.

In another incident, two motorcycle-borne persons chased a woman, who was proceeding home on her two-wheeler and snatched her chain and fled. The incident occurred near Calvaddo-Benaulim, when the woman along with her daughter riding pillion were returning home from Margao. 

According to the complainant, the value of the stolen gold chain is Rs 80,000.

The third incident was reported on the Orlim-Chinchinim Bridge when two unknown persons stole a gold chain from a woman and fled. The Cuncolim Police are conducting investigations.  

The police said that the fourth incident was reported near the Primary Health Centre, Curtorim when the accused snatched a gold chain from a woman who was also proceeding on two-wheeler from Curtorim to Chandor.

As the accused snatched her chain, the woman lost her balance and fled on the ground even as she cried for help went in vain. The Maina-Curtorim Police have registered the case and are conducting investigations. 

Also chain snatch-incident was reported at Agacaim while, two unknown persons riding a two-wheeler snatched a mobile phone handset and fled at Pernem, on Saturday, the police said.   

On Friday, a woman was robbed of her mangalsutra when she had gone to the shop at Malbhat-Marga to buy some essential items.

On Tuesday, chain-snatching incident was reported at Colva Police Station when the accused chased two woman who were proceeding towards Benaulim on a two-wheeler and snatched a chain of the pillion rider and fled. 

Following increasing incidents of chain-snatchings in different parts of Goa, the police intensified patrolling. The police suspect all the chain snatching incidents may be committed by the same gang and have appealed to the people to take care of their valuables.

The police said that in all cases the accused were found to be using helmets and wearing face making it little difficult to identify them.
