Feasibility report on fire fighting sought; but what about encroachments?

MARGAO: Even as South Goa District Collector Venancio Furtado on Tuesday asked fire officials to find out whether the passages in the congested New Market are feasible to undertake fire fighting operations, questions are raised over the fate of the survey conducted by the Margao Municipal Council on the encroachments in the market.

It’s now close to a year since the Margao Civic body had carried out a survey of the New Market on the status of encroachments, but the report is reported to have confined to the dusty records in the civic body for reasons best known to the city fathers and the civic babus.
It is learnt that the MMC had video filmed the survey to crack a whip against the erring traders, but nothing has been heard in the corridors of the civic body on the survey.
President of New Market Association Vinod Shirodkar said the Association has never supported any encroachments in the market. He, however, said the MMC should also crack a whip against commercial establishments along with the markets, accusing the authorities for turning a blind eye to the encroachments by the commercial establishments.
