The incident reportedly occurred at 1.30 pm, when Korde’s wife was busy with her household work. On hearing the sound of shooting, she rushed to Korde’s room where she found him dead from gunshot. She immediately informed about the incident to her relatives and the police.
Ponda PI Sudesh Naik, who rushed to spot to investigate the incident, said that Korde was apparently fed up with his illness which might have led him to end his life.
Korde bravely fought against the Portuguese for which he was handed down a 22-year sentence sent to Aguad jail. However, he managed to escape from jail along with three other freedom fighters by cutting open the grills.
He also celebrated with freedom fighter Mohan Rane and others for Goa liberation.
Korde contested the election in 1976 as Jansangh Party candidates from Ponda. He was the BJP vice president when Union AYUSH Minister Sripad Naik was the president of State unit of BJP.
Recently his book Vrat Swantraladche was released on June 18 during the Kranti Din celebrations at Ponda.
Korde was the founder member of Amey Vidyaprasarak Mandal which runs Dada Vaidya High School, Amey Higher Secondary School and Amey Balmandir at Curti.
Korde is survived by his widow Shoba, son Bhargav, brothers Manhoar, Pramod, Balkrishna and grandchildren.
Korde’s final rites will be performed at Calme Curti on Sunday.
Meanwhile, former Ponda MLA and freedom fighter Rohidas Naik condoled the death of Korde saying, “We lost a brave soldier, and patriot who faced imprisonment for Goa’s liberation.”
