Ferry breaks down, drifts away in Zuari sparking fear among passengers

PONDA: Strong winds and underwater current drifted away a ferry that the broke down on Monday in River Zuari, causing panic among passengers on Marcaim-Rasoi ferry route.

It was on this route, around 26 people died as a canoe overturned, in June 1984. Since then the locals have been demanding for bridge. Marcaim-Rasoi ferry route is considered the longest and dangerous in Goa. 
The ferry which broke down in the river on Marcaim-Cortalim route sparked fears of the vessel capsizing among the passengers onboard, with many praying for their lives. And due strong wind and underwater current, the ferry started drifting from its regular route causing great panic among passengers. 
However, to the luck of the passengers, the ferry came to a halt after it hit the column of Konkan Railway Bridge. 
The passengers were rescued by a ferry despatched by the River Navigation. 
The locals from Cortalim and Marcaim have been demanding for a bridge for the last more than three decades. The river water on this route is too deep. Besides, the rough sea during monsoons makes this route dangerous.
