FIGHT FOR JUSTICE: Divar locals protest at Mardol PS, want Merc owner arrested

Prevented from entering the police station during PI Gaude’s arrival at 1.30 pm; allege that the rich are let scot-free for serious offences; PI assures to bring Meghana to the police station and record her statement within 24 hours

PONDA: Determined in their fight for justice to the husband-wife duo from Divar, who died in the horrific Banastarim accident on Sunday, the islanders on Wednesday protested at Mardol Police Station over the failure of the men in uniform to arrest the Mercedes car owner Meghana Sawardekar and record her statement. 

Feeling that they were denied justice, the locals said it has been three days since the horrific accident which snuffed out three lives and Meghana was not yet arrested. 

The locals waited for three hours for the arrival of men in uniform. Initially, when PI Mohan Gaude arrived at 1.30 pm, the locals were prevented from entering the police station. Later a delegation of the locals met PI Gaude and questioned him as to why the police failed to arrest the car owner. They alleged that the rich are let scot-free for serious offences while common man is harassed even for a minor incident.

PI Gaude said since the past three days the police are busy investigating the accident by verifying the car’s CCTV footage.

They policemen attended court matters with regards to the remand application and bail objections of the accused. 

He said that on Wednesday the accused was produced in court and was remanded in five days police custody.

PI Gaude assured the locals the police will investigate the case thoroughly and bring Meghana Sawardekar to the police station and record her statement within 24 hours.

It may be recalled that on Tuesday hundreds of Divar Locals launched a morcha on the Mardol Police Station demanding the arrest of Meghana alleging that she was driving the Mercedes car when a fatal accident took place. 

DySP Ashish Shirodkar on Tuesday had assured to initiate action against the accused by noon. 

67-year-old Halarnkar, knocked down by killer Merc to undergo ‘cervical spine’ surgery today

BAMBOLIM: Shankar Halarnkar, one of the three victims of the horrific Banastarim accident who is being treated at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday.

Those in the know in GMC confirmed that 67-year-old Halarnkar, admitted to the Neurosurgery ward, is due to undergo ‘cervical spine’ surgery on Thursday for the neck injuries sustained when he was knocked down by the killer Mercedes in which Paresh Savardekar has been arrested.

Giving details on the health status of 21-year-old Vanita Bhandari, a person from the medical fraternity abreast of the facts at GMC said, “In the accident, Vanita suffered multiple fractures and we fixed the same. Subsequently, she faced difficulty in breathing after which we shifted her to the medical ICU in Super Speciality Block. At present, she is reportedly doing well.”

Commenting on 27-year-old Raj Majgaonkar, who suffered a forehead injury in the accident, the source said that Majgaonkar is likely to be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days.
