Filing of nomination for LS polls starts today

PANJIM: The process of filing nomination papers for the May 7 Lok Sabha elections in Goa will start from Friday, April 12, with the issuing of the Gazette Notification for third phase of 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

No nominations will be received on Saturday, Sunday and public holiday.

Goa is among the 22 States to go for single phase polling. According to the information given by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the last date to file nominations is April 19. The scrutiny of nominations will be held on April 20 and withdrawals will be allowed till April 22.

Both the District Collectors have been appointed as Returning officers while, only five persons, including the candidate, will be allowed to enter the RO’s office while he/she files his nomination papers from 11 am to 3 pm on all working days. Also during the time of filing nominations, only three vehicles of a candidate will be allowed to park inside the RO’s office premises.

Both the national parties i.e. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party have already announced their candidates for the elections. The BJP has renominated Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik for the North Goa Parliamentary seat for the sixth consecutive term and has fielded businesswoman Pallavi Dempo for the South Goa seat.

The Congress has given ticket to former Union Minister Ramakant Khalap for the North Goa seat and Capt Viriato Fernandes from the South Goa seat, replacing four-time and incumbent MP, Francisco Sardinha.
