VASCO, MAY 5

Barely a day after the government announced that a ‘flying squad’ would be formed to curb illegal hill-cutting and filling of low-lying areas, filling of low-lying area has resumed opposite Hindu Crematorium at Non-Mon, Vasco.
It may be recalled that the operation had been stopped following media reports, but after a gap of one-and-half months, the activity has resumed.
Residents located opposite Hindu Crematorium at Non-Mon fear that their houses would get flooded during monsoons if the low-lying area is filled.
Vincent Dias of Non-Mon has complained to authorities about the land-filling activities.
He also stated that earlier he had to run from pillar to post once to ensure that authorities will act to curb the activity, but in vain.
“The area will be filled with mud, as couple of trucks with debris has been placed near the construction site,” he said.
He further said about 1,000-odd sq mtr paddy field of the Communidade, which was tenanted to one person has been left uncultivated for the last several years and over a period of time, the field has become water catchments area during monsoon.
“Filling of low-lying areas is going on to erect a shed to store fishing nets and rooms for migrant fishermen,” claimed Dias.
It is learnt that Mormugao Municipal Council is aware about the land-filling activity, but has failed to initiate any action in the matter.
