Final call on alternative transport arrangements tomorrow

PANJIM: Ahead of the All Goa Taxi Operators strike called on January 19, the State Government has made necessary alternative transport arrangements and a meeting has been scheduled on January 17 to take a final call.
Transport Director Nikhil Desai said all alternative arrangements will be done to minimise the effect of strike. He said that responsibilities will be fixed and the final plan will be chalked only after the crucial meeting on January 17.
“We are making all the arrangements for alternative mode of transport and who is doing what job will be decided in a meeting on January 17,” he said.
Tourism Minister Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar said he has conveyed to the Transport Minister to make some alternative arrangements so that tourists are not affected due to strike. “I spoke to Transport Minister and he has informed that all arrangements for alternative transport services will be made,” he said.
The taxi union last week held a series of meetings with their members across Goa and decided to go off  road on January 19 protesting the installation of speed governors and harassment by RTOs, among other issues.
Taxi unions met at Benaulim in South Goa and at Calangute in North Goa, and the meetings were attended by most of the taxi operators.
The Union claims the police as well as RTO are harassing legal taxi operators, while illegal operations are shielded. The Union also demanded that speed governors be not installed in taxis.
