PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Thursday stayed the notice issued by the State government to JSW Steel directing to pay Rs 156.34 crore towards unpaid cess on coal transportation.

The order was passed during the hearing of a petition filed by the firm challenging the notice by the government over non-payment of Rs156.34 crore cess on coal transportation for the period between 2014 year and July 2018. The court thereafter adjourned the matter for final hearing on December 17.

The Assistant Director Transport, South Goa had earlier this month issued Demand Notice to the firm to pay the cess within 15 days.

The JSW in a statement issued has said that it has filed a Writ Petition before the Bombay High Court at Goa challenging the show cause notice issued for non-payment of cess to the extent of Rs 156.34 crore. The petition also challenges the applicability of the Goa Rural Improvement and Welfare Cess Act, 2000 on goods transported by rail.
