Finally, Fomento leaves Sonsoddo plant

MARGAO: The Fomento Green has after a long battle left the plant Sonsoddo on Thursday evening. Fomento Green was operating the plant since 2011 and has always been under some or the other controversy.

The stipulated time period of seven days after the order of the Court ended on February 20. The MMC has taken the charge of the plant after certifying the inventory of the plant and machinery at the location.

The officials who were authorised for the handover procedure were at the MMC plant since morning. The officials inspected the entire stock of plant, machinery, tools and other miscellaneous items within the plant and took over the plant

Confusion prevailed at the plant after the Fomento officials blocked the path to the plant disallowing at least 10 trips of garbage trucks inside. The MMC kept all the garbage trucks in their garage. Since there were no empty trucks, garbage from places in Margao and Fatorda remained unpicked.

Meanwhile, on the orders of the Chief Secretary the Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation Levinson Martins came to inspect the dump at Sonsoddo and took stock of the progress of the work.

“The machines after starting work have screened at least 24,000 cubic meters of garbage from the dump. Sizable work has to happen speedily before the rains. We have extended all support to the MMC for taking over and running the plant. MMC is A-class Council and is quite capable to handle it plant,” he said.

The Municipal Engineer informed late evening that Fomento has left the plant after completing all the procedures.
