VASCO: The game of thrones in Mormugao municipality finally came to a closure on Thursday afternoon when Nandadeep Raut and Reema Sonurlekar were elected as chairman and vice-chairwoman, respectively.
The new heads of Mormugao municipality belong to the panel of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida; and they both got the support of 14 councillors in the 25-member council.
The election to the chairman and his deputy was presided over by Director of Municipal Administration Tariq Thomas; the polls were held through secret ballot.
Five nominations for the post of chairperson were filed, but councillors Yatin Kamurlkar and Rochana Borkar withdrew their nomination.
For the post of vice-chairperson, councillors Leo Rodrigues and Shridhar Mardolkar had also filed their nominations, but withdrew later. Sonurlekar’s opponent Murari Bandekar polled only 11 votes.
Speaking to the media after the election, Nandadeep Raut said that he is against coal pollution and he is with the people who are fighting against coal pollution.
Raut said that his first step would be to solve the coal pollution issue and initiate steps for welfare of the people of Vasco. He further said that he would like to take ahead the various public works in municipal area by taking all councillors into confidence.
Raut was optimistic that Urban Development Minister Milind Naik will support him in developmental works in municipal area.
Raut also assured look into the pre-monsoon works and cleaning of chocked drains to avoid flooding in town, immediately.
An elated Sonurlekar said that she would work for the betterment of the town. “The municipal works will be divided among councillors so that works can be completed in a speedy and efficient way,” she said.
