PANJIM: The monsoon has finally set in on Goa and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Goa will witness heavy rainfall over the next four days from Friday to Monday.
IMD Goa Director Dr Krishnamurthy Padgalwar said that the monsoon finally arrived after a delay of a fortnight. “The Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) has arrived in Goa with rainfall across the State,” he said and added, “We have issued a warning for the next four days for both the districts in the State that heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at a few places.”
IMD has issued a yellow warning which indicates that people need to keep a watch and be updated. The warning has been issued to areas upto 75 kilometres from the coast. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea as strong winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail over the Southwest and West Central Arabian Sea for the next 48 hours.
Asked about the deficit in the rainfall due to the delayed arrival, the IMD Director said the deficit will be covered by nearly 60 percent by the end of the month. “The June rainfall so far has been below normal and in the next 10 days the deficit will be covered by almost 50-70 percent. Thereafter the monsoon rainfall will be normal.”
He said that the monsoons will advance in the coming weeks with the State and the country receiving fairly normal rainfall.
