PANJIM: Goa Traffic Police and District Police on Saturday said that 315 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were booked at about 100 locations during the extensive drive against drunken driving on Friday night from 7 pm to 10 pm across the State.
“In all the cases, vehicles and documents of the violators were seized. All the cases will be referred to the appropriate court of law for prosecution. In cases where excessive alcohol content of more than 200 mg/100 ml was found, the Police Inspector will personally appear before the Court along with the APP and will seek maximum punishment of imprisonment and suspension of licence of the violators highlighting the gravity of the offence,” the police said.
During the drive, a tempo carrying 15 filled LPG cylinders was seized at Porvorim wherein the driver was found under the influence of alcohol. Police are seeking the maximum punishment and cancellation of his licence. They will also write to the concerned agency seeking appropriate action against the LPG dealer.
The authorities further said, “Such irresponsible drivers could cause major catastrophic accidents due to cylinder blasts endangering human lives. In another case at Margao, a Mumbai bound passenger bus driver was found under the influence of alcohol. There were 20 passengers already in the bus and another 16 were to board. The irresponsible bus driver not only endangered the other road users but also put the lives of his passengers in peril. The bus would have to negotiate thorough hilly mountainous terrain for its journey to Mumbai.”
A case has been booked against the driver. Police are seeking maximum imprisonment and suspension of licence in all such cases.
Despite publicity about the drive, 315 cases of drunken driving were booked by the Police across the State in a few hours. Such surprise drives will continue, police said.
