MARGAO: Ask locals of flood-hit Sanvorcotto about the cause of Tuesday’s flooding, and they point fingers at the pipe culvert erected by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).
Says Cuncolim Municipal Councillor, representing Ward No 3 of the civic body, Dr Laximan Naik: “The GSIDC never consulted the locals or took them into confidence while planning the pipe culvert in the rivulet. They may possess the technical know how, but had no knowledge about geography and the water flow in the rivulet.”
He pointed out that the pipe culvert caused obstruction to the smooth flow of water in the rivulet. “The media has said around 150 houses must have been affected by the floods, but many more have been affected,” he said.
Dr Naik said there was no need for a pipe culvert. “The money spent by GSIDC has gone down the drain. Since the damage is already done, the government should fully compensate the affected residents,” he added.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai, who is representing the Sanvorcotto ward, said the GSIDC did not pay heed to the Council warning that the pipe culvert would causing flooding.
