PANJIM: The Goa government on Tuesday informed the High Court of Bombay at Goa that the FIR registered against protestors of the now-scrapped IIT site at Melauli cannot be withdrawn.

A group of persons, named in the FIR accused of attempted murder, had approached the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR against them.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the government stated that the FIR cannot be quashed as the accused named in the FIR used deadly weapons to attack the police personnel on duty. Moreover, it said that if the High Court finds merit it can order removal of any accused’s names from the FIR. The matter has now been posted for further hearing after the summer vacation.

On January 6, a tussle had broken out between the protestors of the proposed IIT site at Melauli and the police while the former opposed the now-scrapped IIT project. Several police personnel were injured and some seriously attacked in the melee, that followed after an uneasy calm in the village during the previous days. Goa Police registered a FIR for attempted murder and other charges against the protestors.
