PANJIM: The JMFC at Mapusa has directed the Calangute police station to register First Information Report (FIR) against its inspector and a constable for allegedly intimidating the owner of a local bar and restaurant and beating his customers.
The court’s order on November 28 comes in the wake of a petition filed on behalf of Mehfil bar and restaurant situated at Naikavaddo in Calangute. The petitioner had alleged that on September 18, PI Nilesh Rane along with other police personnel entered the premise and allegedly started beating customers visiting the restaurant. The police officer then asked the owner to shut down the business.
“…he (owner) has obtained all the required permission under the law such as no objection certificate from village panchayat, food and drugs administration, health, fire services, labour department for shop and establishment,” the petitioner had said.
A complaint in this regard was filed at Calangute police station but since it was not registered, the petitioner approached the Court seeking relief. In the petition, he said, “The owner has not approached the Calangute police station personally. Since the officers are hand in gloves and scared of Nilesh Rane that he would be arrested in drug case and or Immoral Trafficking Act,” he said.
In the order, Magistrate D M Kerkar observed that the petitioner has produced sufficient prima facie evidence on record and directed filing of FIR against PI Rane and Constable Vinod Naik and also to carry out a detailed investigation.
