Fire and Emergency Services saved 117 lives in 10 months

PANJIM: Goa State Fire and Emergency Services Director Ashok Menon on Saturday said that his department from April 2017 to January 2018 attended 5,896 fire and emergency incidents saving 117 human lives, 549 animal lives and property worth Rs 28.87 crore. 
Menon was speaking at the Goa State Fire and Emergency Services 30th Annual Inspection day Parade and Prize Distribution.
Menon said, “The government has also approved procurement of mobile training van/educational van for the training centre. The state-of-the-art mobile training unit will be necessary for training programmes in disaster preparedness and fire safety training for village panchayats. Since 2014, 1,553 village residents from various talukas have been trained.”
He said that the flagship training initiative of the department in educational institutions in the State is being well received by teachers. In 2017 training was imparted to 274 secondary school teachers in ‘Basic Fire Safety & Evacuation Drill’. So for 3889 Secondary teachers have been trained since 2010.
“Under the Safer School Safe India Program conducted since 2015 the department has trained 268 primary school teachers in Fire Safety Education and Awareness Campaign. These teachers of Class l to IV have then trained 24300 primary school children,” he added
The Director said that his department has been pursuing with the government to fill up vacancies of various sanctioned posts of the department and also creation of additional posts for providing promotional avenues to officers.
“The government has now taken our proposal under the high level empowered committee and the department is waiting for approval of the State government for filling up these posts.” Menon said.
