CALANGUTE: A fire at the old garbage dumping site in Aradi-Candolim on Saturday caused panic in the village, as the flames were dangerously close to the sub-power station.
The entire Candolim panchayat team led by Sarpanch Sandra Fialho rushed to the site and took stock of the situation, while a fire brigade was dispatched to extinguish the flames.
“There was an accidental fire at the old dumping area and it caused much anxiety among the locals and Panchayat members, as the Sub-Power Station at close to the site.  However, the fire was quickly brought under control by a fire brigade,” Candolim Panch Fermino Fernandes told Herald.
Following the fire at the dumping area, some residents wondered if the garbage collection drive would continue or be stopped. However, speculations were laid to rest by Fernandes, who stated that the fire had nothing to do with the existing dumping or composting unit of the Candolim Panchayat.
