Vasco: A fire broke out in a branch of Dena Bank at Swatantra Path, Vasco, on Saturday. The bank locker, cash and server were saved by fire personnel, while only old computers and documents were destroyed.
The incident came to light at around 1 am, when a passerby heard the beeping of the bank’s alarm. He alerted the police, who in turn alerted the Vasco fire station.
“When our staff reached the site, we noticed that the security person deployed by the bank for night duty was missing. We broke open the doors with a lock cutter, and with the help of three fire tenders, we managed to douse the flames before the same could spread to other rooms in the bank,” said Namdev Parvar, Vasco fire station official.
He continued, “Inquiries with bank officials revealed that they had failed to renew their fire licence, while they claimed that the fire broke out due to a short circuit and engulfed the store room, in which Rs 80,000 worth of property, including modems, old computers and documents, got damaged, while property worth lakhs was saved.”
