MAPUSA: Strong winds accompanied by incessant rains caused destruction as several trees and branches were uprooted and fallen on roads and houses in several areas of Bardez. Firefighters were busy clearing trees and power supply was also disrupted at a couple of places due to broken power lines. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
On Friday, the Mapusa fire station received a total of 32 fire and emergency calls. There were cases of trees and branches fallen on houses, roads, vehicles and electrical wires that were reported.
An official from the Mapusa fire station revealed that the loss suffered in Bardez taluka alone is approximately around Rs 1.30 lakhs.
“There were emergency calls throughout the day and night. We cleared most of the trees and branches however in some places the owners cleared the trees themselves. We are yet to clear another six trees,” he said.
Mapusa, Siolim, Assagao, Vagator, Chapora, Anjuna, Ucassiam and several other areas of Bardez were battered by the rains and high-velocity winds.
Fire fighters were busy clearing trees which fell across Bardez till late evening and the calls continued till late Friday night.
