Fire Department saved property worth Rs 89.4 cr and 102 humans from accidents last year

PANJIM: The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services saved property worth Rs 89.40 crore last year, of which Rs 83.39 crore were from fire accidents while Rs 6.01 crore was from other accidents.

The fire personnel also saved one person from fire, while 102 humans and 751 animals were saved from other accidents.

Director of Fire and Emergency services Nitin V Raiker said that the fire personnel attended a total of 6040 calls, of which 2175 were fire calls and 3865 were non-fire emergencies. They also responded to 55 major fire calls.

During last year, four persons lost their lives due to burns suffered in major fire accidents and 140 human lives were lost due to other incidents. Also nine animals were killed, including five due to fire accidents.    

The Goa State Fire and Emergency Services trained 2091 persons in fire fighting, fire prevention and rescue technique. It conducted 2216 fire prevention inspections and 27 mock drills.

According to information given by Raiker, the Mapusa fire station attended a serious fire call at Anjuna on October 23 wherein a tea stall caught fire due to LPG cylinder explosion and one person Denison D’Souza was injured and succumbed to his injuries. 

They also attended another major fire call where a scrapyard caught fire at the Colvale industrial estate on December 28, wherein a worker who had received severe burn injuries succumbed three days later. The loss due to fire was estimated to be Rs 40 lakh and firemen saved property worth Rs 80 lakh.

The other 21 major fire calls attended last year were by Pilerne, Canacona, Pernem, Bicholim, Porvorim, Vasco, Mapusa, Ponda and Verna fire stations.
