MARGAO: A major fire engulfed a saw mill at Benaulim late Monday evening, causing destruction of property.
Upon receiving a call at around 10.08 pm, Margao fire brigade immediately despatched a fire tender to Benaulim to start the firefighting operations. But, as the fire was fast spreading to the sawmill, the fire services immediately requisitioned the services of the tenders from the Verna, Ponda and Curchorem centres to join in the firefighting operation.
Fire services divisional officer Nitin Raikar and other officers also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, Raikar told Herald from the spot that the fire brigade personnel were battling with the fire till 11.15 pm.
Terming the fire accident as a major one, Raikar said the cause of the fire is being ascertained, while admitting that the fire might have caused huge loss of property.
He said the cause of the fire will be ascertained once the fire is completely brought under control.
