PANJIM: In a marathon exercise to sanitise public places, the firefighting teams have disinfected about 255 places in the last four days of this month.
Goa Medical College wards, bus stands, streets, markets, religious premises, village panchayats, offices, railway stations are among a long list of places sanitised since April 1 even as the sanitisation process is ongoing.
“On the initiative of the government on March 31, we have started a sanitisation drive in all public places on April 1, across the State. We have so far attended to 250 approximately places to ensure prompt sanitisation. This special drive is in addition to our work of attending to fire and other emergency calls,” Fire and Emergency Services (FES) Director Ashok Menon told Herald.
All the 14 fire stations including the fire force headquarters have been put into this operation. The department has ensured safety gear for the firefighting teams. The officer said that minimum personal protective equipment (PPE) are to be worn while preparing or handling sodium hypochlorite solution and these include nitrile rubber gloves, approved safety glasses, respiratory protection and lab coat, among other safety gears. The guidelines for fire services speak about the use of sodium hypochlorite for disinfecting.
