PONDA: A major fire gutted a godown near the Sun In Hotel at around 2.30 pm, on Tuesday.
The godown had stored cotton used for making mattresses. The massive fire also burnt down the entire shed which housed the cotton.
The loss in the fire incident is estimated to be over Rs 2 lakh, according to a source.
Ponda Fire Department personnel doused the fire after a long struggle.
The godown is owned by Shabbir Fakir.
He said the incident took place 2.30 pm on Tuesday when the workers he hired to repair the metal shed accidentally caused the fire. The workers were in the process of welding a sheet to repair the metal roof shed.
Fakir was reportedly not at home when his godown caught fire. He learnt only when the workers informed him about it. The Ponda fire personnel rushed to the spot. Three fire tenders were used to bring the fire under control, taking the fire fighters two hours to douse fire which by then had gutted the entire godown.
Shabbir Fakir has another shop at Upper Bazaar where he sells cloth, cotton and fibre mattresses.
Earlier on Sunday night, in another fire incident a house belonging to one Survesh Naik from Adpoi was gutted causing a huge loss to the owner.
The incident took place at around 8 pm, when the clothes lying at various places in the house caught fire which spread further damaging other goods.
The Ponda fire personnel rushed to spot but couldn’t bring the fire under control.
A second fire fighting vehicle was called to assist the personnel.
