VASCO: Property worth Rs 1 lakh was gutted after a fire broke out in an office of a chartered flight at the old terminal at Dabolim airport on Wednesday.
According to sources, the fire broke out at about 6 pm in the office of Transaero Airlines. The office at the old terminal building was vacant as the operations have been shifted to the new airport terminal.
Speaking to Herald, Airport Director M Suresh informed that the office was not in use, as it is shifted to the new terminal building. “All the furniture and fixtures are shifted to the office in the new building, but there were some unwanted materials like papers which caught fire. The cause of the fire is not yet known,” added Suresh.
“The airport staff brought the fire under control with the help of fire extinguishers and later the fire tender from Vasco doused the fire completely,” he said.
Assistant fire in-charge of Vasco Fire Service Dilip Dicholkar said the exact cause of fire is not known and the loss is estimated to be about Rs 1 lakh. “We faced great difficulty in dousing the fire, as there was no proper ventilation and the entire room was filled with smoke,” he added.
During fire fighting, Dicholkar sustained injuries to his hand, as due to pressure of the water, a glass pane broke and fell on his arm.
Meanwhile in another incident, goods worth Rs 1 lakh were destroyed in a fire at a building at Vasco.
