MARGAO: A godown belonging to a packaging unit at Margao Industrial Estate in Nessai was engulfed in a late-night fire on Monday.
Margao Station Fire Officer (SFO) Gil Souza said that the godown of Mamta Packers caught fire and despite the efforts of fire personnel, it took over five hours to bring the blaze under control.
Fire tenders from Margao, Cuncolim, and Curchorem were deployed to combat the fire. The estimated loss is around Rs three lakh, according to SFO Souza. Property worth Rs 20 lakh was saved, he added. Firefighters used 48,000 litres of water to extinguish the fire, with over 20 firefighters engaged in the operation. The godown contained tonnes of packaging waste paper for recycling, to be transported to Sangli-Kupwad, Maharashtra. A large number of locals gathered at the site to lend a helping hand.
The Maina-Curtorim police team also visited the spot. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but the Margao fire station officer Souza mentioned that they would reach out to the Electricity Department for further investigation. Traffic on the road was temporarily suspended during the firefighting operation.
