VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council will now install fire hydrants and CCTV cameras at the garbage dumping site at Sada.

This was decided after Vasco Fire and Emergency services incharge Dilip Bicholkar said that the department in 2013 had requested the municipality to install fire hydrants and water hose reels at the garbage dumping site at Sada. However, there was no compliance from the municipality till date, he had stated adding that it was important and safety precaution measures at the garbage dumping site to handle during emergency situations.

On Wednesday night the legacy waste at Sada caught fire and some passersby informed the Vasco fire and emergency services, who rushed to the site and doused the fire.

If the fire had to spread, it would be disastrous, fireman Narayan Kerkar said adding that after fire was brought under control, mud was dumped on the garbage.

Mormugao chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Thursday said that fire hydrants, fire hoses and CCTV cameras will be installed at the garbage dumping site at Sadasoon.

Rodrigues said that though the Vasco fire and emergency services had recommended installation of fire hydrants and fire hoses, the municipal council could not implement it due to financial crisis. The Council has now decided to install fire hydrants and as many as 20 CCTV cameras through CSR initiative even as he the council is trying to find out whether there was any foul play.
