PANJIM/MARGAO: With the recent major fire incident in Berger-Becker Paints company at the Pilerne Industrial Estate, former Director of Fire and Emergency Services P K John has stated that factories should always be prepared to deal with fire by keeping fire-fighting equipment, detection system, extinguishers etc.

John added that the buildings should be lightening proof and fire trucks should be kept on standby at larger factories. He stated that although the buildings do have certain fire safety equipments, the functionality of the equipment is essential and people should be trained to use it. Fire safety drills should be conducted every six months, he added.

Although fire is dangerous, John stated that most people succumb due to the inhalation of poisonous gases such as Carbon Monoxide is emitted when a fire breaks out at a paint factory. “People should be careful when working at paint factories, as there are chemicals that are receptacles to fire, once ignited the flames could turn deadly,” he said.
