PANJIM: Fire safety at industrial estates will be increased with four stations planned at different industrial enclaves across the State.
These sub-stations will cater to the industrial estates and surrounding areas, which were earlier given fire cover by far-off stations.
The new sub-stations will augment the fire safety measures in the industrial estates, which are prone to fire-related accidents.
The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services identified Tivim, Sancoale, Tuem and Quitol industrial estates, in its first phase, which has already got a go-ahead from the government. This comes in addition to one fire station each at Verna and Kundaim industrial estates.
“We conducted GPS mapping during the entire process… the distance, location and other factors were examined and we suggested setting up fire stations at the four places,” Director Ashok Menon said.
Soon after obtaining approval, a written communiqué was sent to the EDC last month to provide infrastructure, and manpower and fire-safety equipments will be provided by the fire department.
“It will save time from the process of identifying land and its acquisition process. We will take care of the manpower and equipment,” Menon said.
“This, he said, is on the lines with the system followed at Verna and Kundaim industrial estates.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had announced in the 2013-14 Budget that his government would set up fire sub-stations in every industrial estate outside one km of the existing fire stations with additional equipment.
Besides, the process of land acquisition is underway to set up fire stations at Valpoi, Bicholim and Porvorim. While a new fire station at Curchorem will be completed by September this year.
