PANJIM: The fire fighters have been on their toes in the wake of incidents due to heavy rains since last three days while they simultaneously have been carrying out COVID-19 duty as well.
In the latest data shared by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services, the control room received a total of 534 monsoon emergency calls from 7am on August 4 to 7pm on August 6. Fortunately no fatalities except for the tragic death of a Verna Industrial Estate employee – due to the falling of a tree on the moving car – have been reported as on date.

Out of the total calls, 512 calls have been cleared while 12 were being attended to until Thursday evening while 10 were pending.
Pernem, which has received maximum rainfall during this week, also reported highest 68 incidents; as per the calls made to the department. Mapusa and Canacona reported 59 calls each. Vasco, that has been reporting increasing COVID-19 cases and deaths, has interestingly recorded the least 4 emergency calls.
On August 4 when the State witnesses heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by winds, 269 emergency calls were made to the department. One death was also reported when an industrial employee, who was driving to his work place, was crushed under the tree.
Majority of the calls during the three days were related to falling of trees/branches on the roads and/or houses.
