Firemen in Salcete kept busy with landslide, falling trees

MARGAO: There was a minor landslide behind Damodar Chamber Society on the road leading from Lohia Maidan when a portion of the small hill came down Wednesday morning. This resulted in a threat to the buildings on the hill and to residents. 

On noticing the incident, citizens informed the Margao Municipal Council and fire and emergency services. Residents of this area are now living in fear that their lives will be at risk if the landslides continue. 

It is pertinent to note that due to heavy rainfall several incidents of tree fall and landslides, besides walls collapsing have been reported in Margao and surrounding areas.

“The landslide was noticed in the morning due to incessant rains and we fear danger to our lives,” Margao resident Morris Colaco said.  

Fire Station Officer, Gil Souza, reported that a landslide occurred near Cartier garment shop in Margao, resulting in some damages. Swift action was taken by fire personnel who rushed to the scene. Fortunately, there were no reports of human casualties. In another incident, a tree fell on the road and compound near St. Sebastian Chapel at Camorlim. The call was attended by H Fernandes, ensuring the area was promptly cleared.

Further, a jungle tree fell on a shed and toilet at Santemol, Raia, prompting a visit from firemen who cleared the area and mitigated any potential risks.

Additionally, a teak wood tree fell on the road near Fatorda police station.

A day prior, a house caught fire near Cine Lata Theatre at Margao, resulting in damages amounting to Rs 90,000. Prompt action by the fire personnel with one fire tender brought the blaze under control, saving property worth Rs 50,000. In a separate incident, the body of an unidentified man was retrieved from the river at Rumde Nuvem, with the combined efforts of Margao and Curchorem Fire Stations.
