PANJIM: Two areas close to the venue of the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) had fires on Tuesday, before and during the ceremony.
There was no property loss, and officials of the Fire and Emergency Services said that timely action prevented Goa University property from being gutted.
A Fire officer said that the first call came at around 1pm and a fire extinguisher was rushed to the spot. Following a second call another engine was roped in to douse the fire to the dry wild grass on the university plateau.
The first incident was reported near the Science faculty of university while second was reported around
6.30pm near the parking areas of the Dr Shyamaprasad Mukharji stadium, venue for IFFI closing ceremony.
The Fire officer said the call was received from traffic police to prevent the fire from spreading to the parking area which was full of cars. Since it was approaching towards the parking area, the tender that was rushed to the spot was able to douse it completely, an officer said.
Till late evening, a fire extinguisher was present at the spot near venue to prevent any further incident.
