PANJIM: Five months after signing a MoU with the Central government over the cochlear implant to children suffering from a hearing disability, Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) has got a batch of three children, who would be the first beneficiaries of this facility on Saturday.
The three children will undergo cochlear implant surgeries at GMC on Saturday. A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a person who suffers from severe or profound deafness.
“On Saturday, three children will benefit from the MoU we signed with the Government of India on cochlear implant in June,” Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said.
He said the government has identified another ten hearing impaired children, who will be operated in the following six months.
Under the MoU a special rate has been offered to Goa where 20-25 children will initially be operated free of charge.
