First in India? Andhra eyes strict social media curbs for teens

Andhra Pradesh could become the first Indian state to restrict social media access for individuals below 16, sparking a wider debate on child safety and digital freedom. The state government has hinted at such a move, citing concerns over young users being exposed to content they may not fully understand. Andhra Minister Nara Lokesh pointed out that pre-teens and teenagers often encounter material that can affect their mental and emotional wellbeing, making regulation necessary. The proposal appears to be inspired by Australia’s model, which limits access to platforms such as TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat for minors.
