PANJIM: The eight Goan girls who played a stellar role in ensuring the title to West Zone at the all-India Rugby 15s Zonal Championship, which concluded at Amritsar recently, now have a different task to perform.
Most of them would now be appearing for their semester examinations, which have already begun. Absolutely nothing wrong in that. What perturbs the students who may have missed some papers is that their results will now be labelled as ‘second attempt’ after they answer the supplementary examinations, which, otherwise, are meant for those failing to clear a semester at the first hurdle.
“Why don’t the authorities refrain from putting a ‘second attempt’ remark on our results once we clear the papers during supplementary examinations?” students asked, before adding, “After all we have the sanction of our college authorities to participate in the Nationals. It should be considered as first attempt since we will be answering the papers first time.”
Three of the players who participated in the National Rugby Championship are from MES College of Arts and Science, Zuarinagar.
“As per Goa University rules once a student answers a supplementary exam, the result will come as having passed on ‘second attempt’. We cannot do anything about it. The University statutes are like that,” said an official of the college speaking on anonymity.
He cited the example of a student who participated in an all-India NSS activity when the semester examinations were on and his
results after answering the supplementary examinations came as ‘second attempt’.
“The college had written to the Goa University to change the ‘second attempt’ status on his marksheet, but the answer was negative,” he informed.
A student from another college admitted she had faced a similar problem but got it rectified as normal result after she approached the relevant authorities.
Students are not even spared during the first two years of graduation when the examinations and assessment are done internally by the colleges.
When contacted, the Goa University sports section in charge said that this rule has been followed even earlier. “There is a need of relaxation in the rule but till today we have not received any recommendation in this regard,” he said.
He added, “It can be modified. We have to put it up to the academic council and an amendment in the ordinance needs to be changed,” he said.
Repeated attempts to contact the Goa University registrar went in vain.
