CURHOREM: The first phase of Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in Curchorem Constituency is likely to be completed by December next year.
The foundation stone for STP for Curchorem-Cacora municipal areas under the first phase was laid in December last year and tendered for Rs 98 crore. Till now 40 per cent of works has been completed in the form of laying pipelines and construction of maintenance holes at various places.
According to PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral, inspection has been done by the IIT and Secretary from Union Ministry of Environment to avail the Central funds of around Rs 200 crore for the second phase.
“If everything goes well, tender will be floated in January next year for the second phase and the STP will be constructed near Oddar bridge in Curchorem by spending around Rs 35 crore once all the sewerage points connected after laying the pipelines, so that Rs 400 crore STP covering entire Curchorem Constituency could be operational within next three to four years time without any difficulties,” said Cabral.
Complaining about the lapses on the part of the contractor, a local resident said that the authorities must give them prior intimation about the activities of digging their lanes/roads, as otherwise it causes many problems for them to move out of their houses.
Another local Pradip Kakodkar, a Chartered Accountant said that infrastructure developments are always welcome but it should be properly planned and executed.
It is seen at many places necessary caution signs boards are not displayed by the contractor, like road closed, road diversion due to sewerage work and as a result motorists are put to great inconvenience.
When the issue was brought to the notice of the Managing Director of the Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Limited (SIDCGL) Amar Vazirani, said that all the necessary precautionary guidelines to be followed while carrying out the works awarded to contractors.
“All the directions and necessary guidelines are issued to the contractors. I will speak to them,” he assured.
