First phase of Margao’s wholesale fish market nearing completion, vendors to occupy new building soon

MARGAO: The first phase of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) is nearing completion and the wholesale fish vendors are likely to be asked to shift to the new building soon, to facilitate the construction of the market’s second phase.

While speaking to media persons, SGPDA Chairman and Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar confirmed that the market’s first phase construction will be completed soon. He added that he expects all the wholesale fish activities to be shifted inside the market, before the next monsoon season begins.

He explained that Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will then carry out the construction of the second phase of the wholesale market in the remaining area belonging to SGPDA.

Incidentally, the market area as well the roads in front of the market, are being strictly monitored by the High Court to ensure that cleanliness level is maintained.

While the SGPDA and Margao Municipal Council (MMC) are finally working towards the garbage management inside and outside the market, the traffic police is ensuring that there is no illegal retail sale of fish happening outside the market.

The timings for the market being opened and closed are also being maintained with SGPDA also putting a mechanism in place for regular washing of the market area.

However, the traditional fishing community from various parts of South Goa have urged the SGPDA to take them into confidence with respect to the plans of the second phase of the market to confirm that all their demands and concerns regarding the market are being fulfilled and addressed. The fishermen and local fish traders also want to know if the first phase of the market will have all the facilities they need.
