PANJIM: The first rain showers may have brought some respite to many from the scorching heat, but not to the motorists travelling on the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg road in the Capital city.
After the spell of showers in the early hours of Monday, at least seven motorists skidded due to slippery roads near Kala Academy. However, they were lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
Traffic police personnel posted near Kala Academy said “Due to slippery roads and the rotten leaves that fall from the trees which settle on the road, the first rains provide moisture to the rotten leaves giving rise to slippery road conditions. However, the fire brigade did a really great job in cleaning the road. All leaves that were stuck to the road were flushed away. We did not get any other casualty since the morning incident.”
Complaining that the concerned authorities do not take preventive measures as part of pre-monsoon works, Ashish Shaik, a resident of Panjim, said, “The trees are also home to many birds. During other seasons of the year the faeces of these birds settle on the road and get dried. The first falls get it to its primary stage making the road slippery. This happens mostly every year and action is taken only after an incident, nothing is done before to prevent this from happening. The fire brigade was very quick with their response thought.”
