PERNEM: In the latest incident involving stray cattle on the Malpe national highway, a truck carrying fish overturned while attempting to evade a cow that suddenly appeared on the road. The accident occurred during the early hours of Tuesday.
The truck, en route to Sawantwadi, swerved to avoid a cow running on the road, resulting in the vehicle damaging the divider and ending up on the opposite side of the road. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, however, the vehicle suffered considerable damage.
In compliance with a High Court order, every municipality and village panchayat is required to construct cattle shelters with special subsidies from the government. Despite some panchayats having erected cowsheds, they are not actively providing shelter for the animals. Consequently, many stray cattle end up occupying roads, leading to potentially fatal mishaps.
Pernem police conducted a panchnama of the accident.
