The fish plant at Sanguem Industrial Estate has become a matter of grave concern to the people from Sanguem, particularly those residing at Dabamol and Cotarli wards of Uguem village Panchayat.
Less than a month ago, the company was pulled by Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar after it was found releasing the waste water and prawn shells in an open laterite stone quarry near the factory.
With foul smell emanating from the site, Gaonkar along with the health officials had conducted a site inspection and the company was directed to take all precautions. However, despite the directions, the company seems to have not learnt their lessons and continues to release the waste water.
Villagers informed that the whole area surrounding the fish plant is emanating foul smell as waste water from the project is found flowing freely in the factory backyard with no control whatsoever.
With no adherence to the safety measures by the company, the villagers have expressed fears of the waste water soon finding its way in the nearby rivulets and agricultural plantations.
Acting on the complaint made by the villagers, Sanguem Shiv Sena Chief Datta Prasad Sanguemkar visited the premises and warned the company of desired action if the company continues to discharge the waste water in the open.
