MARGAO: Fish traders reiterated their frustration over continued thefts of their plastic fish trays from the wholesale fish market, Margao. They have blamed the illegal scrap dealers for the theft.
On Tuesday several fish traders gathered at the Fatorda Police Station to dtake up the issue with the police officials. They demand police against the illegal scrap dealers. Fish traders have also said that they are not ready for any settlement.
Such type of incidents were also reported in 2021 where an illegal scrap dealer from Nessai was caught stealing the plastic fish trays from the wholesale fish market, Margao. Fish traders had laid a trap and caught the gang involved in the theft of fish trays.
Recently, such robberies have resurfaced. Nearly 1,500 fish trays have been stolen in recent days from the wholesale fish market, claimed the fish traders.
“After doing the inquiry at the personal level we found that several fish trays missing from the market are seen at one of the illegal scrap yards in Cuncolim. We can easily identify those trays, due to the symbols of ours,” said Imam Shaikh, one of the fish traders.
He further said that a few days ago they had filed a complaint with the police and today they gathered there to inquire about the same.
Each fish tray cost around Rs 700 to 800, and nearly 1,500 trays, mostly belonging to the boat owners and fish traders, was missing.
Another fish trader said they are struggling to earn a livelihood, and such types of incidents are resulting in losses.
