Vasco: Retail fish vendors gave a green signal to go ahead with the construction of fish market after the Mormugao Municipal Council assured the municipal fish market vendors to show ownership document of the property of MMC where the new fish market is proposed is to be built.
The above decision was taken at a joint meeting on Friday, called by the MMC Chief Officer Arvind Bugde with retail fish vendors and the MMC councillors along with the Deputy Collector Mormugao Sachin Desai.
There were doubts in the minds of the retail fish vendors whether the existing fish market shed belonged to the MMC. The fish vendors feared that in case if someone takes the Municipality to the court objecting to the new project, then there were chances of them losing their place in the shed. So, to be sure that the shed belonged to the MMC, the fish vendors reportedly wanted the municipal officials to show them the documents that the shed was the property of the Council.
The funds for the new market shed were transferred to GSUDA by the MMC as per the proper process required by the 14 Finance Commission.
MMC Chairperson, Nandadeep Raut, said he has assured the retail fish market vendors that the land belongs to the MMC and all support will be given to the fish vendors. He added that within 10 days the work of constructing the new fish market will start and the erection of temporary shed work will begin by Monday.
Adv Fr Michael Fernandes, who on behalf of the retail fish vendors spoke at this joint meeting, told the media later, that the MMC has explained about the utilisation of 14 Finance Commission Fund for the improvement of the municipal area. This, Fr Rodrigues said, had cleared most of the doubts of the fish vendors.
