MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Monday too admitted that there are unauthorised activities of the fish cutting and cleaning in large quantities at wholesale fish market, and the waste generated on account of these activities are disposed of in an unscientific manner.

In the reply filed before the South Goa Deputy Collector and SDM Jyoti Kumari with regard to the petition filed by Savio Dias pertaining to menace at markets belongs to South Goa Planning and Development Authorities (SGPDA), Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes denied that the matter is pending due to the fault of MMC.

It may be recalled that Savio Dias, resident of Madel, Margao had filed a petition before the concerned authorities related to unattended menace at wholesale fish market, resulting in pollution and nuisance.

Further, the CO stated that the wholesale and retail markets are both managed by the SGPDA and it is their responsibility to manage the same.

“It is understood that the retail and the wholesale fish markets, the SGPDA, have awarded the work of internal cleaning of the markets to a private agency on contract. The said agency collects the waste and stores at different locations within the market premises, and the same is collected by the municipality,” the CO stated.

The Chief Officer informed the SDM that the civic body is not the authority with the issue of formalin or to check if goods are harmful to the general public or beyond limits. The civic body daily collects the garbage from the aforementioned SGPDA retail market as well as the wholesale fish market.

In the reply, the MMC has stated that the council has set a 5 TPD biomethanation plant at SGPDA retail market for the treatment of the wet waste and is likely to be inaugurated and commence on October 27.

The CO has also mentioned unhygienic conditions at the market which was communicated and brought to the notice of the SGPDA on several times.

The next hearing in the matter will be held on November 15.
