Fishermen celebrate feast of St Peter & St Paul in port town

VASCO: The traditional fishing community from Kharewado and other parts of the port town celebrated the feast of St Peter and St Paul with religious fervour and gaiety, on Thursday

On the occasion, the priest blessed the mighty sea and fishing boats at Kharewada and prayed for a new and bountiful fishing season asking St Peter, the patron saint of fishermen to intercede for them.

The priest prayed and sprinkled holy water on the statues and devotees which was followed by a litany.

All Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association President Jose Philip D’Souza stated that the feast was held in solemnity, prayers were recited and a religious service was held at the Old Cross Chapel at Kharewado, which was largely attended by fishermen and their families.

“The statue of St Peter was later taken from the Chapel to Kharewado fishing jetty where prayers were offered at the jetty Chapel. The priest then went on decorated fishing boats into the Arabian Sea as part of their annual tradition and called upon the Almighty and St Peter to protect the fishermen when they venture in the high seas,” said D’Souza.
