VASCO: The fisherwomen at Vasco fish market have refused to shift to the alternate land until the new market complex is ready.
The fishermen have demanded that they be shifted to the footpath nearby. However, the local MLA Carlos Almeida says that the fishermen will have to be made to understand the plan.
Almeida met the fisherwomen and discussed the matter. The fisherwomen said that they are not willing to shift to the alternate Dev Damodar trust land and have demanded that they be shifted to the nearby footpath.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said that the fisherwomen have agreed to move out from the old market place, but not to the alternate land decided by MMC. “We will have to now build a temporary shade for them on the place they desire and then start the work of the market,” the chief officer said.
Former chairperson Deepak Naik said, “We need to make the fisherwomen to understand regarding the plan. They can’t be intimidated by showing fear of courts and legal proceedings,” he said.
MLA Almeida and the person who the fisherwomen presently consult on any issue said, “The fisherwomen have to be convinced by the MMC and no one is against construction of new market.”
