VASCO: Fisherwomen from Vasco on Tuesday told the local municipal authorities that they were “lip service” to the problems faced by them.
When the local Mormugao Municipal Council was holding its regular meeting on Tuesday, the fisherwomen entered the meeting hall and informed the councillors that they are opposed to the move of putting up shacks on Baina Beach and illegal sale of fish outside fish market.
The fisherwomen told the council that despite their complaints against illegal sale of fish outside fish market, they were doing “lip service” to their grievance.
The fisherwomen also met Chairman Nandadeep Raut and slammed him and the council for “just giving lip service to them” and council’s inability to stop the illegal sale of fish by migrants outside Vasco fish market.
The fisherwomen told Raut that migrants sell fish at various spots in the municipal jurisdiction; but despite knowing this fact, the municipal inspectors turn a blind eye towards such rampant illegalities.
“Why should we even pay sopo and other charges which the municipality takes from us, whereas those migrant women who sell fish illegally at other places in Vasco are making merry by not paying a single penny to the MMC,” asked a fisherwoman.
After hearing their grievances, Raut and Councillor Fredrick Henriques assured the fisherwomen that they would soon try to resolve the issue.
